A cold front came in Friday night and continuing through the weekend bringing in a marine influence. This marine influence will may bring potential showers, higher relative humidity, and lower temperatures. This may occur on the west side of the fire along with NW winds and gusts up to 20 MPH. The warm and dry conditions support surface fire spread. Due to these conditions, flare-ups, an increase in smoke, and single tree torching will continue to occur within the interior of the fire. This evening, wind patterns will shift from the NE toward the SW bringing in cooler and moister conditions. Light rain showers are expected Saturday morning. Fire managers have been preparing containment lines and mopping-up near the perimeter of the fire for many days now in anticipation of a challenging wind event. Ridge top winds may create occasional flare-ups of vegetation in the upper elevations. In the interior of the fire, there is a potential for some unburned and recently burned vegetation to reburn and increase the amount of smoke produced over the fire area.   An aerial reconnaissance was conducted yesterday along with another infra-red helicopter flight to detect any heat source within the fire area. Crews are taking advantage of these conditions and have been aggressively moping-up, or extinguishing any burning material near containment lines. Helicopters dropped water to assist crews in their mop-up efforts. Some smokes were visible well within containment lines in the southwest corner of the fire. Many crews have been performing repair and rehabilitation work to mitigate previous suppression activities. Fire managers are now using data from a radiometric helicopter flight that detects small amounts of heat down to the size of a cigarette, to better map the fire area. This data is then displayed on a map and the coordinates are given to fire managers who then will plan effective work assignments. Recent beneficial rain effects are quickly evaporating as the fuels, or vegetation is exposed to the sun and lower humidities. Yesterday, the total amount of acreage burned increased very slightly by only an estimated six acres.  Fire managers have recently conducted an aerial reconnaissance of the entire fire area and mapped hot spots or smoky areas near containment lines. Very few smokes were detected along the west end of the fire near the Crescent City Fork of Blue Creek and others were well within the interior of the fire away from containment lines. Work assignments are being based upon recommendations from those aerial observations.
