Fire crews successfully continued burnout operations-"burning out" unburned fuel between the fireline and any areas the fire burned-in the northern portions of the fire, approximately 13 miles north of the community of Hyampom. An anticipated change in the weather on Tuesday has highlighted the importance of the work these firefighters are accomplishing. These burnout operations take time, but they can be very effective in limiting the fire's spread. In the south, fire crews are moving forward with fire activity repair work. This may include covering dozer lines, constructing water bars and, in some areas, reseeding to prevent future erosion. "These crews are focused on removing evidence of several weeks of firefighting activities as much as they can," said Incident Commander Mike Quesinberry.TODAY: North: Firefighters will continue burnout operations, and mop up previously..."

"Hell's Half Complex for July 19, 2008 (Hells Half Complex Wildland Fire)"

"Approximately 5 residents near Dry Lake were issued a mandatory evacuation order by Humboldt County Sheriff's Department on Friday. Fire crews have worked around the private property in the northwest corner of the Hell's Half Fire for nearly a week to prepare for a burnout which is planned to protect the area from the approaching 11,007 acre fire. Firefighters are planning to conduct the burn around the private property tomorrow and along the firelines set in place over the last week if the weather permits. The burn out will remove burnable material between the firelines and the oncoming blaze. According to Incident Commander Mike Quesinberry, the burnout operations will continue over the weekend if the weather permits. "We're looking at a change in the weather coming in about Tuesday," he said. "It's real important that we get this fireline burned out before the winds start pushing against it." In the northeast corner, a small spot fire was quickly..."

"Emergency Fire Closure Order No. 10-08-11 (Hells Half Complex Wildland Fire)"

" SIX RIVERS NATIONAL FOREST ORDER No. 10-08-11 Hells Half Complex Closure Pursuant to 36 CFR 261.50(a) and (b) and to provide for public safety, the following acts are prohibited within the Lower Trinity Ranger District of the Six Rivers National Forest. If the weather prediction holds, we should be able to eliminate forest fuels and widen our control lines," said Quesinberry. In some areas a large amount of unburned fuel remains between the fire perimeter and the control lines. Preparations are being made to secure the line ahead of the fire. Firefighters will focus efforts in areas where homes are located and in the Mingo Creek area where the fire is burning the hottest. Today's fire size is 10,424 acres with 40 percent containment.Firefighters successfully burned out nearly a mile long area of forest fuels along the northwest edge of the fire line on Thursday. Residents are urged to attend. The heavy smoke inversion that has blanketed areas surrounding the Hell's Half Fire Complex in Humboldt and Trinity counties lifted Tuesday, improving visibility but increasing fire activity as a result. The most active area of the fire was in the northwestern corner of the fire where the fire crossed Mingo Creek but firefighters worked aggressively to contain this area. Firefighters also attempted to burn out fuels to improve fire lines in the north, but shut down operations due to an increase in fire activity. With the change in weather, fire managers expect fire activity to increase, but say that the last couple of socked in days have had mixed effects on the nearly 10,000 acre fire. "The higher humidity of the last few days caused the fire to be less active, but the heavy smoke that came with that inversion prevented us from utilizing aerial resources to fight the fire or even look at what the fire has done," said Mike Quesinberry, Incident Commander. "Yesterday, we were finally able to get in the air and, according to the meteorologist; we expect that we will be able to do more of that in the coming days."The most active areas of the fire were in the northwestern corner of the fire near Mingo Creek and south near the western side of the 2006 Panther Fire and the South Fork of the Trinity River.South: Crews..."

"Hells Half Update July 14, 2008 8 AM (Hells Half Complex Wildland Fire)"

" YESTERDAYOnce again dense smoke and poor visibility hampered fire fighting efforts on the Hells Half Fire. Helicopters were unable to fly for the second day in a row. However, dense smoke helped hold fire behavior in check giving fire fighters time to improve and strengthen existing dozer and hand lines and mop up hot spots up to 200 feet from fire lines. Structure protection and assessment continued with separate groups on both the east and west sides of the South Fork Trinity River, including a night shift. Dozer line construction continued east towards the river, through the old Sims fire. On the north end of the fire, crews continued to lay hose line and held and improved dozer line built from the 6 road east towards the River. Mop up along the entire eastern flank of the fire continued in Coon Creek. Dozer line originally constructed two years ago along the perimeter of the Old Panther Fire to the river was reopened, strengthened and improved.TODAYPatrolling will continue on..."

"Hell's Half Complex Fire Update - July 13, 2008 8: (Hells Half Complex Wildland Fire)"

"Northern Rockies Interagency Type 2 Incident Management Team Jess Secrest, Incident CommanderSunday, July 13, 2008, 8:00 a.m. HELLS HALF COMPLEX FIRE UPDATE Cause: LightningStart Date: 6/20/2008Estimated Date of Containment: July 30, 2008Acres: 8,058 acresContainment: 29 percent Fire Information: Gary Hoshide, Public Information Officer, (530) 629-2184 Evacuation orders are issued for areas south of the Hells Half Fire.
