The area was analyzed in the 2004 Gotchen Risk Reduction and Restoration Project FEIS. The Record of Decision for the project was signed by Mt. Adams District Ranger Nancy Ryke in January of 2004. Approximately 400 acres of fuel reduction (cutting of dead trees) has been accomplished. The dead trees were felled and either left for wildlife habitat or offered for firewood. In addition another 400 plus acres of dead, dying or diseased trees have been harvested before their commercial value for timber was lost, these areas were planted tree seedlings. Adams Ranger District of the Gifford Pinchot National Forest. How big is the fire and when will it be contained As of July 18, the fire covered 7,933 acres. Containment will depend on weather conditions over the next few weeks. Over 20 miles of line construction was completed by July 18.. How close is the fire to Trout Lake and Glenwood The fire is about 11 miles from Trout Lake and 8 miles from Glenwood. Currently, there is no threat to either community. Today fire activity is expected to increase around 1 pm and continue through 7 pm. Islands of fuel will continue to burn within the perimeter of the fire. Spotting may occur to the east and southeast during early evening. Fire is primarily spreading from heavy dead and down fuels and spotting from trees with heavy lichen in unharvested areas and through slash from recent timber harvest areas. Today&#39;s fire activity included continued burning in heavy dead fuel. Heavy helicopters supported firefighters with water drops. Direct line was constructed today with dozers and hand crews along the south flank. TODAY&#39;S ACTIONS: Crews began constructing line on the south, west and east side of the Cold Springs Fire. Several Hotshot crews arrived today and will be working night shifts to take advantage of cooler temperatures and less active fire behavior for continued direct line construction in rugged terrain.Supression efforts will continue during night shift as safety allows. Adams estimated at 8,000 acres VANCOUVER, WA - Gifford Pinchot National Forest fire officials estimate the Cold Springs Fire has grown to be 8,000 plus acres. The wildland fire in the Mount Adams Ranger District of the Gifford Pinchot National Forest has closed access temporarily to the Cold Springs/South Climb Trailhead which serves as a primary access point for climbers of Mt. Adams (12, 276 elevation) in southwest Washington.Forest Road 8040 accessing the trailhead has been temporarily closed. Forest Roads 80 and 82 are also closed at the Forest Boundary north of Trout Lake, closing access to all roads, trails and campgrounds east of Forest Road 23.
