Crews have been working tirelessly over the past several days in extreme terrain and have made tremendous progress on the fire. Incident commanders are ready to begin releasing crews to fight other fires but will keep the Great Northern Crew and the 15 smokejumpers to finish cleaning up this fire. Local residents on Lindbergh Lake and in the town of Condon have expressed their gratitude to the fire crews, who managed to keep the fire from spreading over the ridge. The 64 acre fire was stopped and corralled through extensive air support and direct attack by ground crews. "There wasn't any way to get heavy equipment to help dig line around this fire," said Cindy Super, Public Information Officer for the Department of Natural Resources and Conservation (DNRC). Fire officials are comfortable calling the fire 95% contained. If progress continues at this rate, incident commanders will begin to downsize over the next few days and send some of the crews back to their home units or to other fires as needed. Many of the firefighters and command staff were unaware that the Lindbergh Lake Fire had an international component to it. On the Great Northern Fire Crew based out of Condon, MT, there are two firefighters from South Africa. Alfred Boer, from Northern Cape and Phumzile Gininda, from Mpumalanga, South Africa arrived only one week ago in an exchange program set up between the two countries. They will be working with the Great Northern Fire Crew until mid September performing all of the firefighting duties and natural resource projects that need to be completed..."

"Press Release--lindbergh Lake Fire 75% Contained (Lindbergh Lake Wildland Fire)"

"July 25, 2008, 4:30pm, Condon, Montana - Fire officials announced today that the Lindbergh Lake Fire is 75% Contained. Road number 79 (Bunyon Lake Road) is now officially closed until further notice. The road closure is necessary to maintain public safety. As fire crews continue to make progress, more traffic is expected on this road. The plan for today is to reinforce established fire lines and continue to work on containing the fire. Also, fire crews are deploying hose lays in order to aid with ongoing mop up operations. Officials estimate the fire to be 60% contained at this time. Additional resources arrived this morning and fire crews are still digging hand line along the right flank of the fire. "Really, the only way to get the line dug is with hand crews. Heavy rain last night and cooler temperatures today will go a long way toward helping fire crews get a handle on the fire although officials are not calling it controlled at this time. "We must have gotten over a half an inch of rain on the fire last night," said Brad Gillespie, Fire Behavior Analyst from the Flathead National Forest. "We can expect the fire behavior today to be quite benign," he added but cautioned crews to watch out for possible thunderstorms and high winds later this afternoon. Hand crews were pulled off of the mountain before dark last night due to the slippery conditions caused by the rainfall and the plan is to continue direct attack today. Crews are continuing line construction around the fire, concentrating on the right flank. "We've had several challenges but everything seems to be falling into place. So far," said Cindy Super, Fire Prevention Coordinator and Public Information Officer from the Department of Natural Resources and Conservation (DNRC). One challenge is the presence of the threatened plant species known as Water Howellia. The presence of this plant limits dipping sources for the helicopters doing bucket drops on the fire. Fortunately, the water sources closest to the fire don't contain this particular species. Another challenge is the extreme terrain where the fire is burning. Again, the cooperation of the weather and the efforts of fire crews have managed to keep the fire from crossing the ridge. Currently there are two type-2..."

"Lindbergh Lake Closures (Lindbergh Lake Wildland Fire)"

"Road 79 to Bunyan Lake Lindbergh Lake CampgroundAll trails to Crystal LakeArea surrounding the fire and firefighting operationsSee map for closure"

"Press Release--lindbergh Lake Fire (Lindbergh Lake Wildland Fire)"

"Lindbergh Lake Fire Continues to Burn July 22, 2008, Condon, Montana - An 80-acre fire burning in heavy timber on steep slopes continues to burn this morning near Condon. The Lindbergh Lake Fire was reported near 1:00 pm on July 21 and rapidly progressed up the steep slopes on the southwestern side of Lindbergh Lake. "At this time, the fire is being driven by the topography," said Karen Sargeant, Public Information Officer for the Montana Department of Natural Resources and Conservation (DNRC). "It's very steep terrain in there." Crews initially attacked the fire from the lake and from the air. Helicopters from the DNRC in Missoula and Helena dropped buckets of water while a retardant tanker dropped loads of retardant at the head of the fire. Several boaters recreating at Lindbergh Lake volunteered to use their boats to shuttle crews and equipment across the lake to the base of the fire where they started fighting the fire. The plan for today is to continue fighting the fire with..."
