The fire has consumed 15,089 acres of bug-killed trees and is presently smoldering in the Wilderness area. "We had about an inch of precipitation on the fire over the weekend and that has really slowed it down," said Fire Management Officer Paul Hutta. There are no structures threatened by the fire. Over the last week, the New Fork fire was active in the Glimpse Lake and Trapper Lake area within the Wilderness. The Pinedale Ranger District will continue to monitor the fire until a weather changing event completely extinguishes it. The fire ignited on July 29 on the bank of New Fork Lake north of the town of Pinedale and has burned 13,400 acres to date. Currently there are two fire specialists on site monitoring the fire. According to Mark Randall, Assistant Fire Management Officer, "This fire is probably going to keep burning until snowfall." Randall also said that fire activity will greatly increase whenever the weather is hot and dry like it was this last weekend causing visible smoke plumes."One thing we really want to stress to people who plan to camp and hike in the Wilderness is safety. Forest Officials are ordering additional resources to help combat the blaze. There are presently no structures threatened and no road or trail closures associated with this fire. The cause of the fire is not yet determined. The world of fire suppression is changing. Fire seasons are longer and fire behavior often more extreme. The primary reasons for these changes are due to weather changes, the abundance of fuels on the Forest and the increase in structures in the areas close to the Forest borders known as the Wildland Urban Interface area.Traditional means of containing fires are changing. More often, firefighters use multiple tactics on a single incident such as confining and containing a fire to a particular area, while continuing to provide protection at specific points.
