This testing substantially increased fire manager's confidence that Team 3 firefighters will attain their 300-foot objective around all three fires, and be able to successfully turn the Complex over to the transition team today. With the fire beginning to wind down, crews are starting to demobilize from the fire. "I appreciate the professionalism and hard work of the Team, as well as their cooperation with local agencies and collaborators. I also am thankful for everyone being so safety-conscious and the excellent safety record on the incident" stated Incident Commander Nancy Hirsch.A local Type 3 Team will begin shadowing Incident...

Daily Update, Aug. 24, Summit Springs Complex (Summit Springs Wildland Fire)

Oregon Department of Forestry Incident Management Team 3Nancy Hirsch, Incident Commander Summit Springs ComplexDaily Morning Information Update For Sunday August 24, 2008 Warming temperatures, a lower relative humidity and moderate winds aided firefighting efforts on the Summit Springs Complex Saturday. These conditions made hot spots visible, allowing firefighters to locate and promptly suppress these problem areas. Crews have continued mop-up activities inside the containment lines, nearing attainment of the 300-foot objective around all three fires. To aid in suppression efforts, a special flight with an infrared camera was completed over the west side of the complex overnight on Saturday. Difficult terrain and fuel conditions are still concerns on the Green Ridge Fire. In spite of these challenging conditions, firefighters have been able to safely expand the fire line toward the interior of the fire. The Stevens Canyon Fire is now in patrol status, with crews continuing to monitor...

Daily Update, Aug. 23, Summit Springs Complex (Summit Springs Wildland Fire)

Oregon Department of Forestry Incident Management Team 3Nancy Hirsch, Incident Commander Summit Springs ComplexDaily Morning Information Update For Saturday August 23, 2008 Firefighters have had several successful days building fire line and conducting mop-up activities on the Summit Springs Complex. Containment lines held on all three fires despite changing weather conditions. Incident Commander Nancy Hirsch complimented crews on their excellent safety record over the past week, and encouraged firefighters to continue aggressive but safe operations to bring these fires to conclusion. Fire lines held on Green Ridge and Stevens Canyon Fires, with limited perimeter growth. Firefighters are continuing to patrol fire lines and conduct mop-up operations on both fires. The Green Ridge Fire remains a concern due to the potential for large burning material to escape the interior of the fire. Crews have begun using hand-held infrared devises to check for hot spots. Decreased winds have helped...

Daily Update, August 22, Summit Springs Complex (Summit Springs Wildland Fire)

Oregon Department of Forestry Incident Management Team 3Nancy Hirsch, Incident Commander Summit Springs ComplexDaily Morning Information Update For Friday August 22, 2008 Windy conditions continued on the Summit Springs Complex through early evening on Thursday. Firefighters worked to strengthen containment lines established by night crews throughout the day. A few spot fires did occur on the Green Ridge and Summit Springs Fires but crews were able to quickly re-establish the lines. Helicopters continued to provide critically important support for firefighters though air tankers were grounded by the high winds. The eastern flank of the Summit Springs Fire, which has seen acreage growth due to the high winds of the last few days, was held in check this time. The fire line on Stevens Canyon Fire again withstood the windy conditions. Firefighters were able to continue making progress widening the fire line and extinguishing hot spots up to 200 feet to the interior of the fire. The wind-driven fire pushed beyond the eastern and northeastern lines around the Summit Springs Fire, in spite of the cool temperatures and high relative humidity. Scattered rain fell throughout the area, but no precipitation reached the fires. Multiple air tankers responded with numerous retardant drops in an effort to slow the advance of the fire. Containment lines on the other two fires in the complex, the Green Ridge Fire and the Stevens Canyon Fire, withstood the increased wind. By days end, crews working in very steep terrain were able to complete a line around the Green Ridge Fire. The fire is located in the north Metolius basin, where several hiking trails and the Lower Bridge...

Closure Order - Portion of The Deschutes National (Summit Springs Wildland Fire)

A closure order for a portion of the Deschutes National Forest has been issued. Air tankers and helicopters provided critically important support, dropping retardant and water throughout the afternoon. Firefighters on the ground worked to strengthen fire lines on three sides and re-establish the east-side line as winds subsided. Limited growth was observed yesterday on the Stevens Canyon Fire, despite the wind conditions. Firefighters were able to complete fire lines on 100% of the fire perimeter. Crews will be working today to strengthen and improve those lines. The Green Ridge Fire, the northern most fire in the complex, is burning in very steep terrain and received multiple water drops throughout the day.
