The closures went into effect in late August. The 19,775-acre Rattle Fire is 100 percent controlled. The public is reminded to use extreme caution while near burned areas. This includes watching for falling snags, trees, boulders and other dangers associated with a burned landscape. As hazardous trees fall, tree tops can break with downed limbs and branches accumulating on the ground and across roads or trails. Rattle Fire began as a lightning strike on August 17th in the Boulder Creek Wilderness on the Umpqua National Forest. The fire burned 15,985 acres in the Wilderness where salvage, replanting or other vegetation management are not allowed. The Rattle Fire began on August 17th in the Boulder Creek Wilderness and is 90 percent contained. According to fire managers, it will take appreciable rain or snow on the fire to be considered controlled. Today, hand crews, dozers and eight helicopters will be attacking this hot spot as well as isolated areas of fire activity on the east and west flanks, north of the highway. No structures have been lost as a result of this fire and no injuries have been reported. Down canyon winds pushed the smoldering fire into flames and long-range spotting which burned across Pine Bench. The winds driving the fire carried embers to the southeast across SR 138. Early Friday evening fire managers and Oregon Department of Transportation closed SR 138 due to flame proximity to the highway and snag and fire debris moving downslope. Hotshots battled to control spot fires south of 138 until late in the night. Crews also worked direct to stop advance of the fire across SR 138 and provided structure protection of the PacifiCorp Transfer station. The three heavy helicopters flew sorties for five hours with turnarounds of less than a minute to try and halt the southeast advance until dusk. The fire continues to be active through the night at the time of this writing.
