An initial assessment was done and National Park Service firefighters began to immediately contain this fire. The fire grew in spite of firefighter efforts to stop this fire from burning in extremely steep terrain and heavy fuels at an elevation of approximately 6,000 to 7,000 feet. On September 16, management of the fire was transferred to an interagency incident management team. After reaching their goal of containment using indirect fire fighting methods to strengthen the perimeter and suppress spot fires, the fire was then returned to the National Park Service under a smaller incident command team on September 24. This team was responsible to further secure the fire line, begin mop up, patrol and rehabilitate areas...

Fire Update - 09/30/08 PM (Chalk Wildland Fire)

CHALK FIRE UPDATEMonterey Ranger District, Los Padres National ForestTuesday September 30, 2008, 6:00 PM Incident Information: 805-961-5770 (8:00a.m. to 8:00p.m.)Inciweb: http://www.inciweb.org/ Fire Statistics Total acres burned: 3,453 ·· Miles of fireline to build: approx. 9 Date started: 9/27/08 (evening)Percent contained: 8%Expected containment: not determinedFirefighter injuries to date: 1Structures threatened: 12 Structures destroyed: 0Suppression cost to date: $1.8 million Firefighting Resources Crews: 37Engines: 67Helicopters: 10 Air tankers: 8 Dozers: 12Total personnel assigned: 1,326 ·· The increase in acreage in tonight's update reflects a 24-hour burning period. It is primarily south of Nacimiento Fergusson Road which connects Fort Hunter Liggett to Highway 1.The fire has burned approximately 800-900 acres in oak and brush in steep, rugged terrain. There is very little to no wind on the fire and it is primarily slope and fuel-driven.Earlier this afternoon the fire reached and crossed to the north side of Nacimiento Fergusson Road; it is also on both the west and east sides of South Coast Ridge Road. Residents of three parcels of private land within the national forest in the Prewitt Ridge, Alms Ridge and Mill Creek areas, were advised to evacuate earlier today. This transition was made possible as the Southern California IMT reached their objectives. They contained the fire at 3,693 acres while attaining an exemplary safety record with only two injuries. The primary goal for the new team is to maintain an excellent safety record and provide for firefighter and public safety. The fire which is in steep terrain with heavy fuels will continue to burn in the interior. The new team will continue to strengthen control lines, patrol, mop-up, and rehabilitate areas affected by suppression actions. Although the fire is contained it remains active in the interior.
