Investigators have spoken to witnesses, but are still seeking additional information that may assist with the ongoing investigation into the fire. Specifically, the Sayre fire is believed to have started in the foothills last Friday night around 10:30 p.m. near the north east corner of Veterans Park located at 13000 Sayre Street in Sylmar, California. The fire burned over 11,262 acres and destroyed hundreds of residences and is currently 95 percent contained. The fire grew in spite of firefighter efforts to stop this fire from burning in extremely steep terrain and heavy fuels at an elevation of approximately 6,000 to 7,000 feet. As the fuels that are adjacent to the line burnout and cool the possibility of spot fires will diminish. The fire is 94% contained and full containment is anticipated by September 30, 2008. The fire is visible from nearby communities including Three Rivers, Lemon Cove, and Badger. Smoke may be present in some areas within the park. In order to minimize impacts from smoke please: · Close windows, especially at night when air tends to settle. · Use the recirculation option in your car to prevent smoke from entering the vehicle. · Avoid prolonged exertion in heavy smoke especially if you are sensitive to smoke impact. This transition was made possible as the Southern California IMT reached their objectives. They contained the fire at 3,693 acres while attaining an exemplary safety record with only two injuries. The primary goal for the new team is to maintain an excellent safety record and provide for firefighter and public safety. The fire which is in steep terrain with heavy fuels will continue to burn in the interior. The new team will continue to strengthen control lines, patrol, mop-up, and rehabilitate areas affected by suppression actions. Although the fire is contained it remains active in the interior. The fire is visible from nearby communities including Three Rivers, Lemon Cove, and Badger. Heavy smoke may be present in some areas within the park.
