Westy Wildland Fire

INCIDENT UPDATED 8/27/2008

This incident is 100% contained.

Approximate Location

45.059 latitude, -114.986 longitude

Summary

The Westy Fire grew to 4,320 acres over the last two weeks due to increased wind and hotter temperatures. On August 14 the fire was reported to be 125 acres, growing to 940 acres by the following week. The fire made a run to the west and southeast due to gusty winds during the last few days to reach its current size.

There is concern for the Rush Creek Lookout and Monumental Ranch if the fire makes another run. Currently torching single trees, the fire is smoldering and creeping through grass and the forest understory. The fire is being managed for resource benefit with no personnel assigned on the ground. Periodic over flights are being conducted and the fire is being closely monitored.

The Cabin Creek and Rush Creek wilderness fires have not grown. The Cabin Creek Fire is showing no smoke at 5,500 acres and the Rush Creek Fire continues to smolder and creep, remaining at 1,435 acres.

The Pepper Fire, burning in a remote area of the Boise National Forest is now 137 acres and is being managed by the Payette National Forest for resource benefit. No structures or communities are threatened at this time, but smoke may be visible from the town of Yellow Pine and the East Fork of the Salmon River Road.

Breezy conditions are expected today and with warmer temperatures arriving this weekend. A cold front is expected to move through the area Saturday night which should slow fire activity.
