Rattle Fire Update
Friday, September 5, 2008
This morning at 6 am, Carl West's NW Oregon Incident Management Team transferred command of the Rattle fire to a Type III Incident Management Team led by Nick Lunde, Incident Commander.
Fire Camp will relocate to the Oregon Department of Transportation Sandshed, 12 miles east of the Toketee Ranger Station on Hwy. 138. The helibase will remain at the French Creek Ranch,
immediately east of Glide on Hwy. 138. Incident Command offices will be located at the Diamond Lake Ranger District in Toketee.
On Thursday firefighters continued brushing and felling hazard trees along the 4760 road and near Illahee Lookout on the west. Crews anticipate completing brushing and improving
the entire Boulder Creek Trail from north to south perimeter of the fire this weekend. The two heavy helicopters, the Vertol and the Sikorsky ran two fuel cycles today,
cooling hotspots in the NE and SE. Fire activity continues to be monitored, with engines assigned to initial attack within the fire and the areas of the Umpqua National Forest.
Thursday's temperatures ranged from 76 - 84 within the fire, with relative humidities 21 - 25%. Winds were NW to NE at 7-14 mph, with gusts of 20. Observations of fire activity on Thursday did show an increase in spread and smoke production. Energy Release Components are rising and increases the potential for spotting through falling snags scattering embers, as well as, shrubs pushing fire into duff areas. Smoke will continue to increase, as temperatures continue to dry fuels, but no significant growth is expected.
The Rattle Fire is one of over 100 lightning-caused fires started by a lightning complex on August 18, 2008, and is burning in the Boulder Creek Wilderness of the Umpqua National Forest.
